Have any of you seen or have had a Gretsch relic’d that looked like a well taken care of 60 year-old guitar would look like without looking or feeling fake? If so, I would love to see photos and know who did the work. I would love to have the CS look on this without the price tag. I am considering sending this Falcon to MJT guitars to have them do a slight relic on it. They just look “right” to me and I am not someone who likes relic guitars. Here is where I might lose a few of you… The thing about the Custom Shop pieces that I just love is the wonderful job they do with the relics. So far I am really happy with the feel, playability and sound of the GE and would recommend it to anyone looking for a White Falcon. I know it’s a result of the TV Jones compared to the TV Jones Filtertrons in the others but I wasn’t expecting as much due to the 17” body. Probably the biggest difference I have noticed with this Falcon compared to my other 3 Gretsch guitars is the brightness. I will experiment with this more to see if I can get better results. For whatever reason, the tone of the delays caused trouble with the low E and A strings. The only time I really experienced feedback was playing clean using delay with several repeats. I was able to play the GE at stage volumes clean and dirty without issue. I was worried that it would feedback much more that my 6120-RHH, 6120-1959LTDQ, or 6136-SL since they all have laminated tops. My biggest concern with the GE was the solid spruce top. I absolutely love this thing through distortion, overdrive and fuzz. When I ran through overdrive and distortion I was surprised with how well this thing handled dirty tones. All three pickup settings were really nice. That was the first thing I noticed compared to my previous Dyna Falcons. Plugging directly in sans any effects, the clean signal was crystal clear with nice definition. From the moment I plugged in, this this sang. My main amp is a Victoria Execulux which is basically a Gretsch Executive with better quality components. As stated in the specs, the GE has a treble bleed and paper in oil caps. The neck has a slightly different shape than any of my current and previous Gretsch guitars. This model showed up nicely set-up and ready to go. Also, the Falcons I had were either too stark white or too buttery and fake like on the LTV model. I guess I didn’t care for the Gretsch Dynas as I could never get a good balance out of them no matter how much I adjusted them. I have owned 5 prior White Falcons but I never really was connected to them. In the end I decided to go with the GE from Street Sounds. 3 ply laminated top on the CS, and the relic that the Custom Shop does. The main differences to me are the slightly different binding, Seymour Duncan pickups v. It all boiled down to whether the price difference was worth it. I wanted to provide my thoughts on this guitar since so few reviews are out there.Īnyway, I was after a Custom Shop Falcon and had a few on the line but they slipped away. I understand they are the same as the current VS (Vintage Select) models. I just picked up a Gretsch G6136 55-GE (Golden Era) White Falcon.
